During our educational trips to Krakow in Poland, students have visited the Concentration Camps at Auschwitz/Birkenau, Schindlers Factory, The Jewish Ghetto and other places of historical and educational interest. They have also had the privilege of spending time with a Holocaust survivor when the Nazis began their anti-Semitic regime and who lived through the horrors of the Holocaust.
Each and every year has been a resounding success, not only from the perspective of what the students learnt, saw and experienced, but also because of the chemistry and coexistence of such a diverse group of people being thrown together: many young people of different cultures and religions were able to share a common goal. This has led to many late nights of discussions and healthy debate on world issues, politics, ideas, thoughts, and questions. A sharing of emotions in what is a difficult journey taken together. These were in themselves educational and mentally nourishing and underpin our basic aims of learning tolerance and understanding of people who may not come from the same background as us.
A very significant part of our programme is the Next Steps projects that the students undertake on their return to Gibraltar. It is of paramount importance that they participate in this because in this way they cascade their knowledge and experiences to the rest of the community and thereby ensure that many more people can indirectly benefit from the opportunity given to them by Learning from Auschwitz.

If I had another chance to go on this trip again I would say “yes” definitely because every time I think about it, I feel as if I should be a better person and that I should be happy with everything I have in my life and no one can take it away from me.
